Dog Training Techniques
Teach Your Dog To Obey
With Dog Training Techniques
The right dog training techniques will depend on you and your dog. Many of the experts will tell
owners that dog training is actually owner training. Dog owners need to learn to use methods that dog’s understand,
not try to train them to understand random methods that they feel they should.
Patience is the key to a successful training session. A dog wants to work and learn. They want
to please their owners and hate to be scolded or see us unhappy with them. There are three ways to train a dog
effectively and each of them has their own pros and cons.
Using Hand Commands
Many dog owners prefer hand commands to any other dog training
techniques. This allows the owner to simply show the dog a specific gesture and get the dog to do as asked.
This is great for those who are hearing or speech impaired, and even those who prefer a silent method of telling
their dog an order. Hand commands are taught by using a reward system and a word with it at first.
There is a word and hand command for the dog. As the dog learns them both, a treat is given with
every correct response. As the dog is more confident, the word is no longer said every time the hand command is
given till it can be deleted all together. The goal is to be able to silently tell your pup what needs to be
done.
The Voice Command Method
The voice command uses a key word for each desired job you want done. Most people adopt this
method out of all the dog training techniques. This is when you tell a dog to sit, stay, lay down, and come. The
best way to get your pup to learn what is expected from him is to have a simple word or two word phrase that is
easy to understand for each new command.
You would tell the dog to “sit” and when he sat down, give him praise and a treat. As the dog
gets the new command with the word or phrase, reduce the frequency of cookies used to reward and keep praising the
dog. This will enable you to wean out the need for a treat for the old word and begin giving treats for the new
command.
The Combination Training
Using both hand and verbal dog training commands can really be useful for your dog. Many dog
owners find it very useful for their dog to know both. This will allow you to speak a command with its appropriate
gesture when you can, but if the conditions are not voice permitted; your pooch will also know the hand command as
well.
The process is for training is the same. You would use the word or word phrase with the hand
command and reward with a cookie and praise each successful time. As the dog has learned one command both verbally
and by hand successfully, you can then wean out the cookies to begin training for a new command.
