Learning To Behave with
Obedience Training For Dogs
Obedience training for dogs is the number one concern for most pet owners. People want a dog
that behaves. This means that when they tell them a command, they get the result.
Getting a dog to get to the point that you only need to give a command one time and you get the
desired result takes time and energy on your part.
Learning to behave is not something that is automatic for anyone, including your puppy; you need
to spend time with him or her daily. You need to diligently and gently train him or her to understand what is
expected.
The Basics
The basics are what you seek when you are first beginning obedience
training for dogs. There are some commands that are just easier for a puppy to learn than others. This allows
you and your dog to learn what method of training works best. Most experts will tell you that negative
reinforcement does not teach your dog how to behave. It will teach him to be scared. This means hitting, scolding,
or punishment are considered fit and effective methods to teach your dog to obey.
Dog’s can be coerced naturally with treats and praise into certain positions. This can make
learning to respond easy for your dog. Sitting can be taught saying “sit” and holding a cookie over your puppie's
head. This trick causes the dog to sit naturally. He can then be rewarded. Once he understands and complies time
and time again, you can begin a new basic command.
Patience
Patience is the key to obedience training for dogs. Without it you will have a very difficult
time getting your dog to understand what is expected as he will read into your frustration. This tension leads to
scolding, which only further complicates the issue. You need to expect that your dog will need time to learn and
that there are many times that you will have to tell them over and over.
Training is not easy and will not be overnight. You need to dedicate time to your pup’s learning
and be consistent and understanding. How fast your dog learn will depend on age, past, and medical capabilities. Do
not get discouraged if it takes awhile. You may have to try several techniques till you find the right one for
you.
The Difficult Dog
Obedience training for dogs is not always something you can do on your own. If you have a dog
that is difficult you may need some professional help. Some owners do not realize that their dog feeds off the
situation and feels superior to the head of the house. This can make your dog difficult to control and teach.
You may need to talk to a professional dog trainer that can help you step outside of the problem
and learn how to gain the control you lost back. Once you have accomplished who the boss dog is, then you can teach
your dog what he needs to know as he will listen to you. Never be afraid to ask for help when needed.
