Outdoor Training Your New Puppy
Try Outdoor Training Your New Puppy
Easily one of the most frustrating things about being the owner of a new dog is they potty in
the house, but outdoor training your new puppy can actually stop this undesirable action once and for all.
Puppies do not have a specific location assigned to them when they are born, so they are going
to need to be trained where to use the bathroom. This is very much like potty training a baby, and it can be
equally as frustrating as well. By taking your time and understanding that the dog simply does not know you will be
able to get a handle on this relatively quickly.
Using Indoor Pads
One thing that you might want to try when you are outdoor training your new
puppy, is using the indoor puppy pads for them to soil on. This will not only keep your home from becoming
their own personal toilet, it will help them establish a common terrain association. If the puppy knows where they
can go, they will finally assume that this is where they were meant to go.
You need to be very careful with these pads however as a training mechanism. This is because
they eventually lose sight of the pad itself and then soil there solely because they assume that it is their
outside spot. If this should happen, you need to punish the pad not the pup as they are merely acting out of
instinct.
Scent Recognition
Outdoor training your new puppy may actually require some ingenious measures on your part, in
order to be successful. Potty training can be a tricky and delicate thing for a little dog, and you may find that
you have to do some fancy maneuvering in order to have them finally going outside.
One of the best ways to do this is to take a most recent poop that the dog did, and place it
outside somewhere that you would like your dog to actually go. When the pup catches the scent, they will associate
that scent with the location. This will let them know that this is where they are meant to go.
This may take a few tries until you are actually successful, but this method does work. You can
also do this with the pads that you have been using, as you take the soiled ones outside and wait for the puppy to
discover them.
Stay Calm
While it is understandable that people get upset when a puppy soils in the home, outdoor
training your puppy can take some time. The pup is going to need to understand the purpose of the exercise, and
until they do they will make mistakes.
Dogs can even make mistakes up to the first year of life, and if you act calmly and be dedicated
with their progression they will get it. This is something that you need to be calm and collected about, as this is
one of the biggest steps for the young dog to overcome.
