Potty Training Your Dog
Teaching Your Dog Where To Go
When it comes to potty training your dog, it will depend on a few very important matters.
Different breed dogs potty train better than others. You will want to be sure to know how stubborn or quick the
type of dog you have will be at accepting his new place to go to the bathroom.
For some breeds that are extremely difficult you may have to make special provisions for them.
How fast and easy toilet training will be will depend on how old your dog is as well. If your puppy is too young it
may not be capable of holding it's bladder as long as you ask. For dogs over a year old that are still not potty
trained, the process can be very long due to bad habits.
Puppy Time
Most people are extremely excited to bring home that new puppy. Then it settles in that someone
has to teach the new puppy where to go to the bathroom. There are many ways to get your puppy to go where you want
him to go. Potty training your dog will be easy for a younger puppy than
you think.
If you live in a large home you will want to keep your puppy with you at all times. This will
allow you to watch for signs that it is time to go. When you see your puppy sniffing intently in any area it is
time to go outside or to his designated area. Puppy training pads can help those who have large homes that are not
easy to get out of fast enough. They are designed to attract your dog to use them instead of the floor.
Whether or not your dog shows signs of having use the bathroom, bring her out every 2 hours
during the day. Each time your puppy goes potty in the correct location, be sure to give her a treat and praise.
This will make her want to go in this location again and again. Once he learns to go in the spot with no accidents
for more than a week begin to give only praise and weed out the cookies.
Older Dogs And The Bathroom
When it comes to potty training older dogs there are a few things to consider. While most dogs
are already potty trained, some are not for varying reasons. First you want to be sure that your dog does not have
any medical condition that is contributing to the potty issue. Some illnesses can make your dog use the bathroom
more often than normal or affect their function to hold their output. Always see a vet if you question your older
dog’s restroom behavior.
For dog that have never been trained or are having behavioral issue, you will have to be
persistent and patient. You will want to confine your dog to a location that is easy to clean but small enough that
they are less likely to potty in. Then you can proceed to use the same strategy as you would with a puppy. If the
issue is first time training you will have an easy time. Behavioral issues can take much longer to fix.
