Methods to stop barking dogs

Everyone wants to make their dog stop barking.

A dog that continuously barks is a nuisance to not only the owner but also the community.

When you cannot control your dog in some places, the authorities can come and remove them.

If you want to get your barking dog under control there are many ways to begin the training of your dog to keep barking to a minimum.

While some barking is normal and expected, training is meant to stop it becoming an excessive problem by keeping it under control.

Teaching Your Dog To “No Speak”

If barking is only a minor issue for you, a command of “no speak” could help your dog to stop barking when you do not want him to. The best way to train a dog to stop barking at the times you choose is to have a spray bottle handy. You will also want to use cookies to reward him when he does stop speaking. When your dog barks at the wrong time simply spray the water bottle in the dog’s face and say “no speak”. Be sure to avoid the eyes and only use water in the bottle.

As soon as the dog stops barking reward him with praise and a cookie. Over time you will be able to use only the phrase “no speak” and your dog will stop barking. This is the best way to teach your dog what type of behavior is acceptable. It is a positive way to get the results you desire without being too scary or forceful with your pet.

The No Bark Collar

For those who have a severe barker there are collars that can stop your dog from barking by giving an undesired result. There are two types of collars available for training, the citrus color and the shock collar. The citrus collar is placed around your dog’s neck and will spray her with a citrus scent if and when she barks.

Once the dog has learned that barking causes the spray, which is not harmful to your pet, she will stop barking to not get sprayed. The electrical shock collar is also effective in stopping dogs from barking. It uses a battery to deliver a small shock to your dog’s throat each time she barks. It does have a safety mechanism to not over shock and harm your pet. While the shock collar can be effective in training your dog to not bark, many find that the citrus collar is more dog-friendly out of the two.

The Old Fashion Muzzle

A simple and effective way to ensure that your dog will stop barking is to put a muzzle on the dog. This will still allow your dog to drink and stay hydrated; yet keep them from barking while you are gone or in bed. Muzzles are safe, inexpensive, and proven to work well.

If you have a dog who has failed to respond to all other methods, a muzzle will work for you. This will allow you to keep your beloved pet without having to worry that they are disturbing others.
